Abstract: Between 2016 and 2018 and again in 2022 the excavations by the Monument Office of the City of frankfurt / Main unearthed a large sanctuary in thecentre of the Roman vicus of Nida. In the sanctuary, a multitude of deities have been worshipped, most notably Jupiter Dolichenus, Diana and a deity previously unknown called Mercurius Alatheo. There are about 70 shafts, and ten larger pits scattered across the sanctuary. Those shafts contain large amounts of animal remains as well as pottery and small finds.
Most of the shafts and some of the larger pits are most likely the remains of depositions connected to rituals taking place in the sanctuary. The sanctuary was established most likely in the first half of the 2 nd century. Pottery finds in some of the larger pits suggest a usage of the area up until the last quarter of the 3rd century. In addition to the research potential regarding cult practices and ritual, the sanctuary of Nida is an indication, that the vicus was not abandoned in or close to the year AD 260.
