Archaeobotanical database for macro-remain records

All plant macro-remains (primarily seeds, fruits, and charcoal) from archaeological sites in Switzerland and neighbouring regions are entered into the ArboDat archaeobotanical database. In addition to all the projects studied at the IPAS, information on many other Swiss sites is also recorded. Currently, the IPAS database contains information on around 1,500 taxa from over 500 sites (from the Neolithic period to the present day), with a total of over 16 million plant remains, and new sites are constantly being added. This data can be used and exchanged for regional and international comparisons. ArboDat is based on MS Access and was developed by Angela Kreuz and Eva Schäfer from the Hesse State Office for Monument Preservation, continued by Felix Bittmann from the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research, and is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul. It facilitates international data exchange between archaeobotanical working groups.

The comprehensive revision of the database was funded by the Basel Voluntary Academic Society (Freiwillige Akademische Gesellschaft) and the Emilia Guggenheim-Schnurr foundation of the NGiB.
