Archaeobotanical database for macro-residue records

All plant macro remains (primarily seeds, fruits, and charcoal) from archaeological sites in Switzerland and neighbouring regions are entered into the ArboDat archaeobotanical database. In addition to all the projects studied at the IPAS, information on many other Swiss sites is also recorded. Currently, the IPAS database contains information on around 1,500 taxa from over 500 sites (from the Neolithic period to the present day), with a total of over 16 million plant remains, and new sites are constantly being added. This data can be used and exchanged for regional and international comparisons. ArboDat is based on MS Access and was developed by A. Kreuz and E. Schäfer from the Hesse Monument Preservation Department, then continued by F. Bittmann from the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research. It facilitates international data exchange between archaeobotanical working groups.
